We close the year at Heisman HYPE as we began, with Lamar Jackson at #1. Of last week’s top 10 (which is also this week’s) only half played this weekend. Deshaun Watson and Baker Mayfield both had impressive games this weekend, while the other 3 members of the top 5 were at home watching.

Donnel Pumphrey passed Ricky Williams for 2nd in FBS career rushing yards while eclipsing the 2000 yard mark on the season. We shall see who gets the invite to New York.

Heisman HYPE Game of the Week #14

Clemson vs Virginia Tech

In an unusual set of circumstances, several of the top Heisman contenders will not be playing on Conference Championship weekend (Lamar Jackson, JT Barrett, Jabril Peppers, among others). Deshaun Watson, who finished third in last year’s Heisman voting, is still in the Heisman discussion despite being overshadowed in his own conference for much of the season by Lamar Jackson. A big game for Watson and the Tigers against Virginia Tech could wrap up the ACC, lock in Clemson’s spot in the College Football Playoff and earn/solidify Watson a trip to New York for the Heisman ceremony.

Week 13 Heisman HYPE Rankings

7 8 D’Onta Foreman RB Texas
8 6 Jake Browning QB Washington
9 NR Adoree’ Jackson CB/KR USC
10 9 Donnel Pumphrey RB San Diego State

Another Louisville loss to close out their regular season is disappointing no doubt. Despite 3 interceptions, Lamar Jackson had a solid day (281 passing yards and 2 TDs along with 171 rushing  yards and 2 TDs), becoming only the 6th FBS player to achieve 20 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns in a single season (Jordan Lynch, Johnny Manziel, Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton, Tim Tebow). His body of work looks to be sufficient to wrap up the Heisman even without playing in a conference championship game.

Adoree’ Jackson had quite a day against Notre Dame to get himself on the board, scoring touchdowns on a punt return, kickoff return and a reception.

Despite the disappointing season for the Texas Longhorns, who failed to become bowl eligible, D’Onta Foreman became only the second ever Longhorn (after Ricky Williams) to rush for 2000 yards in a season.

Heisman HYPE Game of the Week #13

Michigan vs Ohio State

This one is a no-brainer. A classic rivalry that never disappoints. It features JT Barrett and Jabril Peppers, two players both receiving major Heisman consideration. This game has major implications for the Big Ten as well as the College Football Playoff. A win for Michigan puts them in the Big Ten Championship game and gives them a very good chance of making the College Football Playoff. A win for Ohio State would put Penn State in the Big Ten Championship game ahead of both Michigan and Ohio State and create a very uncertain situation viz-a-viz the College Football Playoff for both Michigan and Ohio State.

Louisville’s loss to Houston on Thursday, coupled with the mediocre performance by Lamar Jackson reduced his lead in the Heisman race by a sizeable amount. The loss in prime time, coupled with College Football Playoff implications came at about the worst possible time.

On another note, Donnel Pumphrey, very much unheralded but gaining notoriety, moved into third place on the all-time FBS career rushing yards list, passing Tony Dorsett. Quite an accomplishment.

Heisman HYPE Game of the Week #12

Louisville vs Houston

Earlier in the season, this looked like it could be a match up of undefeated teams with a trip to the College Football Playoff on the line. Houston has since dropped two games and fallen out of contention, while Louisville has recovered from their loss to Clemson and has a good chance at making the playoff. Lamar Jackson continues to lead the Heisman race, while Greg Ward has faded from the Heisman discussion. Nonetheless, this should be an entertaining game and fans no doubt are looking forward to see what Lamar Jackson will do this week.

Three of the top five Heisman contenders suffered losses this past weekend, with Michigan and Washington falling from the ranks of the undefeated. Lamar Jackson continued to impress against Wake Forest. Clemson’s loss leaves the door open for Jackson and Louisville to make in to the ACC title game and the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, Michigan’s loss adds intrigue to their upcoming matchup against Ohio State.

Heisman HYPE Game of the Week #11

Wake Forest vs Louisville

Lamar Jackson has been the man at the top of most Heisman polls all year. After another impressive showing against Boston College last week with 7 total TDs, Jackson’s stats continue to grow more astonishing. At 6-3, Wake Forest is no pushover and with Louisville currently outside of the ACC Championship game, the remaining weeks are that much more significant for Jackson to cement his Heisman.

7 NR Donnell Pumphrey RB San Diego State
8 7 Jalen Hurts QB Alabama
9 9 Josh Dobbs QB Tennessee
10 NR Dalvin Cook RB Florida State

The top six remain unchanged, as they all won their games this week. The next few weeks feature big conference games for all of the top contenders, which are highly influential in Heisman voters decisions.
