In case you weren’t aware, today is National Signing Day. The nation’s top high school football recruits are preparing to make their official decisions on where they will play in college.
The star system for rating recruits was introduced for the 2002 recruiting class, with 5 stars being the best. There have been 10 Heisman winners to come out of those classes (Reggie Bush through Marcus Mariota). Out of those 10 Heisman winners, according to Rivals.com none were graded lower than 3 stars. The breakdown is as follows:
Reggie Bush – 2005 winner
Tim Tebow – 2007 winner
Cam Newton – 2010 winner
Jameis Winston- 2013 winner
Troy Smith – 2006 winner
Mark Ingram – 2009 winner
Robert Griffin III – 2011 winner
Sam Bradford – 2008 winner
Johnny Manziel – 2012 winner
Marcus Mariota – 2014 winner
In this year’s top 10 Heisman votegetters, only one (Arizona LB Scooby Wright) was a 2-star recruit, with the rest being 3-star or better. There was also an interesting look at the recruiting rankings of this year’s Super Bowl starters.
We will have to keep a close eye on this year’s recruiting class to see how things develop.
