2018 Week 5 HYPE Rankings

Rank Previous Rank Name Position School
1 1 Tua Tagovailoa QB Alabama
2 4 Kyler Murray QB Oklahoma
3 2 Will Grier QB West Virginia
4 3 Jake Fromm QB Georgia
5 5 Dwayne Haskins QB Ohio State
6 9 Jake Browning QB Washington
7 8 Shea Patterson QB Michigan
8 6 Drew Lock QB Missouri
9 10 Justin Herbert QB Oregon
10 7 Trace McSorley QB Penn State

The players in the top 10 did not change in week 5, but almost all of the places got shuffled. Tua held on to the top spot after an easy week against Louisiana-Lafayette. Kyler Murray jumped up to number 2 following a huge game against Baylor (432 passing yards and 6 touchdowns). Will Grier slipped to the third spot despite another impressive game in the Mountaineers win against Texas Tech.  Jake Fromm moved up one spot, despite an unimpressive showing in Georgia’s win against Tennessee. Dwayne Haskins held the fifth spot as he and the Buckeyes got a close win against Penn State to remain undefeated.

Week 6 features Kyler Murray leading the Sooners against a Texas Longhorns team that has exceeded expectations following a season-opening loss to Maryland. A big game in the Red River Rivalry could help provide a major boost to Murray’s Heisman campaign, as it did with previous Sooner QBs to take home the Heisman.

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to come back next week.

2018 Week 4 HYPE Rankings

Rank Previous Rank Name Position School
1 2 Tua Tagovailoa QB Alabama
2 1 Will Grier QB West Virginia
3 3 Jake Fromm QB Georgia
4 5 Kyler Murray QB Oklahoma
5 6 Dwayne Haskins QB Ohio State
6 4 Drew Lock QB Missouri
7 7 Trace McSorley QB Penn State
8 8 Shea Patterson QB Michigan
9 NR Jake Browning QB Washington
10 9 Justin Herbert QB Oregon

Week 4 saw some movement win the top 5, with Tua Tagovailoa taking over the #1 spot after putting up 387 passing yards and 4 touchdowns with a rushing touchdown on top of that in the Tide’s win over Texas A&M. Will Grier, who fell to #2, had himself an impressive game with 356 passing yards and 5 touchdowns in West Virginia’s win over Kansas State.

Week 5 has a few big matchups for players in the top 10. Dwayne Haskins and the Ohio State Buckeyes travel to Happy Valley to take on Trace McSorley and the Penn State Nittany Lions. This matchup has a lot in common with last year’s game with both teams coming in ranked in the top 10, both undefeated and both with players in the Heisman discussion. Penn State lost a close game last year, which was the beginning of the end of Saquon Barkley’s Heisman hopes; we will see if Penn State can bounce back this year. Bryce Love and Stanford, coming off of a thriller of a win over Oregon face Notre Dame this week in another matchup of unbeatens. Love has some ground to gain to get back into the Heisman race this year, and both of these teams need a win in this game to keep their hopes of a birth in the CFB Playoff intact. Jake Browning and the Washington Huskies face a BYU team that pulled a major upset over Wisconsin two weeks ago.

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to come back next week.

2018 Week 3 HYPE Rankings

Rank Previous Rank Name Position School
1 1 Will Grier QB West Virginia
2 2 Tua Tagovailoa QB Alabama
3 3 Jake Fromm QB Georgia
4 4 Drew Lock QB Missouri
5 7 Kyler Murray QB Oklahoma
6 5 Dwayne Haskins QB Ohio State
7 10 Trace McSorley QB Penn State
8 NR Shea Patterson QB Michigan
9 NR Justin Herbert QB Oregon
10 9 Kelly Bryant QB Clemson

The top three remain unchanged after week 3. Kyler Murray made the jump into the top 5 after a big game against Iowa State (348 passing yards and 3 TDs along with 77 rushing yards). Trace McSorley made a move toward the top after a 5 touchdown day (2 passing, 3 rushing ) against Kent State.

Jonathan Taylor of Wisconsin fell out of the top 10 after the Badgers suffered the first loss of the year and Taylor had his worst game of the season, with 117 rushing yards (still not bad) and being held out of the endzone for the first time this year.

Week 4 features some matchups of the current top 10 in the Heisman HYPE Rankings, with  Jake Fromm and Drew Lock facing off as Georgia travels to Mizzou. Bryce Love (just outside of the top 10) will go up against Justin Herbert as the Stanford Cardinal and Oregon Ducks meet in a Pac-12 North matchup. Tua Tagovailoa and the Crimson Tide will host Texas A&M, who gave the 2nd ranked Clemson Tigers a close call two weeks ago in College Station; we will if the Aggies can slow down Tua and company, who have put up over 50 points in each game this year.

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to come back next week.

2018 Week 2 HYPE Rankings

Rank Previous Rank Name Position School
1 2 Will Grier QB West Virginia
2 5 Tua Tagovailoa QB Alabama
3 6 Jake Fromm QB Georgia

8 9 Jonathan Taylor RB Wisconsin
9 NR Kelly Bryant QB Clemson
10 NR Trace McSorley QB Penn State

Week 2 is in the books. There was some movement among the top 10, but the players this week are pretty much the same group we saw after week 1. Will Grier of West Virginia moved up to number 1 after another big week with 4 passing touchdowns. Despite being further down in the top 10, Jonathan Taylor had a huge game with 253 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns against New Mexico.

There some interesting matchups next week, with Dwayne Haskins leading Ohio State into Fort Worth to face TCU and Tua Tagovailoa leading the Crimson Tide into Oxnard to face an upset-minded Ole Miss team. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to come back next week.

2018 Week 1 HYPE Rankings

It’s back! The first weekly ranking for 2018 Heisman candidates from the HYPE model. As I always do, I want to make one note: as should be expected, things move around a lot the first few weeks since the sample size for the current season is small and there is a good amount of variation in the quality of opponents.

Rank Name Position School
1 Dwayne Haskins QB Ohio State
2 Will Grier QB West Virginia
3 Kyler Murray QB Oklahoma
4 Drew Lock QB Missouri
5 Tua Tagovailoa QB Alabama
6 Jake Fromm QB Georgia
7 Justin Herbert QB Oregon
8 Jarrett Stidham QB Auburn
9 Jonathan Taylor RB Wisconsin
10 Mike Weber Jr. RB Ohio State

This was an exciting first full week of college football, with some quality top 25 matchups. Jarrett Stidham and the Auburn Tigers pulled out a tough win against Jake Browning and the Washington Huskies. Last year’s Heisman runner-up, Bryce Love, was held to just 29 yards rushing in Stanford’s win over San Diego State. Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and West Virginia’s Will Grier both had strong showings to open the year, each throwing 5 touchdowns in their team’s wins over Power 5 opponents. There is still plenty of time to make an impression, as we’ve seen that the Heisman race’s most influential games come later in the year. Thanks for taking a look and stay tuned for next week.

2018 HYPE Watch List

College Football is almost here, which means it is time for the 2018 HYPE Watch List. This year’s Heisman race should be interesting, with seven of last year’s top 10 vote-getters having moved on to the NFL. Running backs Bryce Love (3rd in 2017 Heisman voting) and Jonathan Taylor (6th in 2017 Heisman voting) are both likely to be in the Heisman discussion (HYPE Rule of Three #1). Let’s get to the list. (An asterisk indicates a player previously finished in the top 10 in Heisman voting, and any of the HYPE Rule of Three (RoT) that apply to a candidate are indicated).
Bryce Love*(RoT #1) – Running Back, Stanford
He finished second in last year’s Heisman voting. He passed the 2000 yard rushing mark in Stanford’s bowl game. Although he came up short of the Heisman, he took home the Doak Walker Award and the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. If Stanford can stay competitive in the Pac-12 and Bryce can follow up on his 2017 performance, he will likely find himself back in New York this December.
Trace McSorley – Quarterback, Penn State
Although he was definitely overshadowed his backfield mate Saquon Barkley in 2017, McSorley had an impressive 2017 season. He led the Big Ten in Passing Yards Per Attempt, Completion Percentage and Passing Yards. With 13 quarterbacks taken in the 2018 NFL draft, including 5 in the first round, McSorely looks to be one of the top returning quarterbacks in the nation. It remains to be seen whether Barkley’s departure will drive McSorley’s numbers up as Penn State looks to rely more on its passing game, or hurts McSorley’s productivity as he will see fewer loaded boxes.
Jake Fromm – Quarterback, Georgia
Jake Fromm stepped in as a freshman and led Georgia to the National Title game, coming agonizingly close to winning the title. He finished second in the SEC in completion percentage and passing yards per attempt and third in the conference in passing touchdowns. Much like McSorley, he lost his running attack from last season, with the departure of both Sony Michel and Nick Chubb. With an year under his belt and perhaps a larger share of the offensive workload, Fromm has a shot at being in contention.
Jonathan Taylor(RoT #1) – Running Back, Wisconsin
As a freshman, Taylor had a dominant performance, coming close to 2000 yards rushing on the season. He led Wisconsin to an undefeated regular season and was on the verge of making the college football playoff before a loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game in which Taylor was held to 41 yards rushing (eerily similar to the Badgers’ 2014 experience with Melvin Gordon at running back). Behind an always-strong offensive line, Taylor is definitely a player to watch in this year’s race.
Kelly Bryant – Quarterback, Clemson
Kelly Bryant definitely had big shoes to fill as the successor to Deshaun Watson. He did not disappoint, leading the ACC in completion percentage while leading the Tigers to an ACC championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff where they faced Alabama for the third consecutive year, losing to the eventual champions. With the strength of Clemson’s defensive line, they look to be at the top of the ACC again and Bryant can get himself in this year’s Heisman discussion if he can improve on his 2017 performance.

My (totally subjective) pick: Jonathan Taylor

I should mention that, although the HYPE is 8 for 8 picking the Heisman winner, I am 032 with my preseason Heisman picks. Wisconsin is due to get over the hump both in the Big Ten and Taylor will get them there. With big performances at Michigan, at Penn State and (if things work out) against Ohio State in a Big Ten Championship Game and overall 2018 numbers in line with his 2017 performance, Taylor can bring home the trophy. Book it.

Week 14 Heisman Hype Rankings

Rank Previous Rank Name Position School
1 1 Baker Mayfield QB Oklahoma
2 3 Bryce Love RB Stanford
3 4 Saquon Barkley RB Penn State
4 2 Jonathan Taylor RB Wisconsin
5 5 Lamar Jackson QB Louisville
6 6 Sam Darnold QB USC
7 8 Rashaad Penny RB San Diego State
8 10 JT Barrett QB Ohio State
9 7 Josh Adams RB Notre Dame
10 9 Kerryon Johnson RB Auburn

This is the final ranking before the finalists are announced this week and the Heisman Trophy is awarded on Saturday. Baker Mayfield cemented his #1 spot with 243 passing yards and 4 touchdowns along with 65 rushing yards in the Sooner’s big win over TCU which clinched their stop in the College Football Playoff for the second straight year. Jonathan Taylor was held to 41 yards rushing in Wisconsin’s loss to Ohio State, the Badgers’ first loss of the season, which, unfortunately came at the worst possible time, keeping them out of the playoff. Bryce Love’s 125 yards rushing and 1 TD weren’t enough to get Stanford past USC in the Pac-12 Championship game.

Thanks for following along this season. Tune in Saturday night to see if Baker does, in fact take home this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Heisman HYPE Game of the Week #14

Big Ten Championship

Wisconsin vs Ohio State

Jonathan Taylor and the Badgers can punch Wisconsin’s first ticket to the CFB Playoff with a win against Ohio State in the conference championship. A Wisconsin loss would certainly make things interesting for the Playoff Selection Committee. Taylor has 1806 yards rushing on the year, with an outside shot at cracking 2000 yards if he can have a big day against the Buckeyes. This situation is similar to where the Badgers found themselves in 2014, led by running back Melvin Gordon heading into the Big Ten Championship game with a shot at making the playoff. In that case, however, the Badgers were blown out in that game 59-0. Meanwhile for the Buckeyes, they seemed to have been eliminated from playoff contention after their loss to Iowa, but they’ve remained in the conversation and winning the Big Ten would certainly help their cause. It’s also worth mentioning that this week is the last opportunity to make an impression on Heisman voters and the handful of players on teams vying for a conference title have a chance for a strong final statement.

Week 13 Heisman HYPE Rankings

Rank Previous Rank Name Position School
1 1 Baker Mayfield QB Oklahoma
2 2 Jonathan Taylor RB Wisconsin
3 3 Bryce Love RB Stanford
4 4 Saquon Barkley RB Penn State
5 7 Lamar Jackson QB Louisville
6 6 Sam Darnold QB USC
7 5 Josh Adams RB Notre Dame
8 9 Rashaad Penny RB San Diego State
9 NR Kerryon Johnson RB Auburn
10 8 JT Barrett QB Ohio State

Baker Mayfield stayed at #1 after cruising to a win over West Virginia despite sitting out the first series a punishment for his antics the previous week. Jonathan Taylor ran for 149 yards and a touchdown in a win against Minnesota. Bryce Love ran for 125 yards in Stanford’s statement win over Notre Dame. Newcomer to the list Kerryon Johnson’s 104 yards rushing and a touchdown were the key in Auburn’s upset win over Alabama to earn the Tigers a spot in the SEC Championship game against Georgia, whom they beat just two weeks ago.

Six out of the current top 10 players (Mayfield, Taylor, Love, Darnold, Johnson and Barrett)  will be playing in conference championship games this coming week, giving them a final opportunity to add to their Heisman case. Come by next week for the final ranking before the Heisman Trophy ceremony on December 9th.

Heisman HYPE Game of the Week #13

Notre Dame vs Stanford

This is a classic rivalry game featuring two of the nation’s top running backs in Notre Dame’s Josh Adams and Stanford’s Bryce Love. Both have been in the Heisman discussion over the course of the year and both have a shot at making it to New York as Heisman finalists this year. Notre Dame had their hopes of making the College Football Playoff for the first time dashed after getting blown out by Miami two weeks ago in a game where Adams was neutralized, being held to 40 rushing yards and just 2.5 yards per carry (interestingly, the only other game in which Adams was held below 3 yards per carry was Notre Dame’s  loss to Georgia). Bryce Love, meanwhile, is leading the nation in rushing yards per game at 172.3, and is averaging over 8 yards per carry. This is a match-up of running backs  worth tuning in to. Happy Thanksgiving!
